The Blood Trials by N.E. Davenport
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
I managed to finish this book, but it was a bit of a struggle. There were some interesting ideas and worldbuilding here, but the whole thing felt kind of undercooked. The pacing was off and the characterization shallow. The protagonist is supposed to be nineteen years old but feels much younger --she is brash, hot-tempered and impulsive and makes many questionable decisions. I know the point was to see her grow beyond that, but she didn't really seem to be doing so. Also (and this is a nitpick, I know) everybody talks about "kicking your ass" all the time? It got tiresome after a while. I mean, pick another phrase, can't you? Altogether, it just felt like the book needed tighter editing and another draft.
