Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
I've seen a lot of 5-star reviews for this book, which I can't understand--I mean, it's okay, with a lovely atmosphere and setting, and a solid SFF concept of an alternate world...but nothing much seems to happen. It's a tightly constructed puzzle-box mystery, and while in the manner of the British it unfolds neatly and without fuss, ticking off its reveals like clockwork, I got to the end and decided there wasn't that much of a 'there' there. The ending, especially, seemed to dribble away into nothingness. I'm afraid I just can't fathom all the praise for this book. Oh well. No book is for everyone, and my TBR stack awaits.
